Dominating the field is a large bold V-sign hand gesture formed by contrasting mirror-polished and matte-frosted surfaces, symbolizing the victory of the popular uprising. Overlying the V-sign, in large typographic lettering across the upper and middle field, are the Czech inscriptions SAMETOVÁ REVOLUCE (Velvet Revolution) and the historic slogans KDY, KDYŽ NE TEĎ? KDO, KDYŽ NE MY? (When, if not now? Who, if not us?). The date 17.11.1989 is inscribed in the lower field, with a detailed relief view of Prague Castle (Hradčany) skyline rendered below, serving as a historical and geographic anchor to the event. The Velvet Revolution — the nonviolent transfer of power that ended Communist rule in Czechoslovakia in November 1989 — takes its name from a phrase attributed to Rita Klímová, the dissident who served as unofficial translator for the opposition and later became Czechoslovakia's ambassador to the United States. Within six weeks of the first student protests, Václav Havel was president. Niue has become a favored issuing jurisdiction for commemorative silver owing to its favorable licensing arrangements, producing coins with no meaningful domestic circulation.
