The attribution of the painting has its own history: "The Man with the Golden Helmet" was considered a Rembrandt for nearly three centuries before technical analysis in 1985 determined it was almost certainly the work of a pupil from his workshop, sharply revising its art-historical standing without diminishing its popularity at the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
