The Sopwith Camel was responsible for destroying more enemy aircraft than any other Allied fighter in the First World War — over 1,294 confirmed kills — yet it was notoriously unforgiving to inexperienced pilots, killing a significant number of its own through the violent gyroscopic torque of its Clerget rotary engine.
