Niue's commemorative silver program in the 1990s was largely brokered through the New Zealand Mint, with the island's government licensing its name and currency authority to generate revenue — the coins were never intended for circulation on the island itself. This piece honors HMS Resolution, the vessel James Cook commanded on his second voyage of 1772–1775, during which he became the first navigator to cross the Antarctic Circle.
Cook's second voyage definitively disproved the long-theorized Terra Australis Incognita as a temperate, habitable continent.
