Beschrijving keerzijde Full-length colored portrait of Tsar Paul I of Russia in three-quarter view, depicted in an 18th-century military court uniform of dark green with gold buttons, wearing the blue sash of the Order of Saint Andrew and the Cross of the Order of Saint John at his breast, holding a sword hilt at his side. Behind him, a colorized architectural background depicts a grand imperial palace facade. The oval inner field is framed by an elaborate gilt decorative surround featuring two large scrolled columns with inlaid blue zirconia crystals, gilt double-headed eagle of the Russian Empire at the apex, and a pair of spread-winged angels in high relief at the base. A gilt scrolled cartouche at the bottom bears the inscription 'Paul I' and the dates '1754–1801'.

Aanvullende informatie

Niue has operated as a coin-issuing jurisdiction since 1987 primarily as a vehicle for New Zealand-licensed commemorative programs, with virtually none of its issues entering circulation on the island itself — the entire population hovers around 1,500. This piece belongs to a series honoring Russian tsars, issued under a licensing arrangement that has made Niue one of the more prolific commemorative issuers relative to its size.

Paul I ruled from 1796 until his murder in March 1801, strangled in his bedroom by conspirators that almost certainly included his own son, the future Alexander I.
