The Nuestra Señora de Atocha sank in a 1622 hurricane off the Florida Keys while carrying an illegal surplus of silver and gold beyond its manifest — contraband loaded by merchants bribing officials to avoid taxation. Mel Fisher's 1985 recovery of the wreck, after a sixteen-year search, produced over 40 tons of silver and gold artifacts. The find triggered years of litigation between Fisher and the State of Florida before the Supreme Court ruled the wreck lay in federal, not state, waters.
