Tokelau — three Pacific atolls with a combined land area under 12 square kilometers and a population below 1,500 — has no independent monetary system and uses the New Zealand dollar in daily life. Its numismatic program exists entirely as a revenue mechanism, licensing celebrity and pop-culture imagery for commemorative issues sold to collectors worldwide. This coin is one of dozens in that series, produced under the same legal framework that allows the territory to issue coins under New Zealand's Crown administration without those coins ever entering circulation.
