Reverse description A dramatic high-relief battle scene depicts Leonidas I, King of Sparta, at the centre of the composition in a fierce fighting stance, brandishing a sword aloft in his right hand and gripping a round hoplite shield in his left, his muscular torso partially armoured. He is surrounded by a dense mass of Spartan warriors clad in Corinthian helmets and carrying spears and round shields, filling the field in a powerful sense of depth and movement. Selective red colouring applied to blood spatters heightens the dramatic intensity of the battle. The inscribed name LEONIDAS is distributed among the lower portion of the composition, with individual letters integrated into the scene amid fallen warriors and weapons.
