Additional information

This piece belongs to Canada's Transportation series, which the Royal Canadian Mint ran through the late 1990s and early 2000s to mark figures whose work shaped how people and signals moved across distance. Marconi's inclusion is defensible on Canadian grounds: it was at Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland, that he received the first transatlantic wireless transmission in December 1901, making Canadian soil the terminus of that experiment.

The Newfoundland connection is often understated. Marconi chose the site partly for its elevation and exposure to Atlantic airflow, and partly because the British Post Office had already rejected him.
