Surrounding the portrait are stylized radio wave motifs rendered as sweeping concentric arcs, evoking the wireless telegraph transmissions for which Marconi is celebrated. A bird in flight and additional decorative elements appear in the background field. The centenary dates 1901-2001 are inscribed in the upper portion of the field, commemorating the hundredth anniversary of Marconi's first transatlantic wireless signal.
