Cook Islands issued a substantial run of wildlife-themed copper-nickel crowns in the late 1980s and early 1990s, largely marketed through the Franklin Mint and similar distributors to collectors in Europe and North America. These pieces were never intended for domestic circulation — Cook Islands had no practical use for a five-dollar crown on an island economy operating largely on New Zealand currency. The Alpine Ibex, native to the European Alps, has no geographic connection to the issuing territory whatsoever.
