| Obverse description | The obverse is divided into two distinct registers with an antique finish. The upper register depicts a silhouetted scene of crusader figures bearing a pennant flag charged with a cross potent, evocative of the Jerusalem Cross, set against a textured, matte field. The arc legend HISTORY OF THE CRUSADES runs along the upper rim in bold serif lettering. The lower register features a raised circular medallion containing the right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, as engraved by Ian Rank-Broadley, with the legend ELIZABETH II to the left and COOK ISLANDS to the right within the inner circle. The denomination 5 DOLLARS appears below the medallion along the lower rim, with the engraver's initials IRB incuse beneath the portrait. |

| Reverse description | The reverse presents a richly detailed, high-relief antique-finished composition depicting Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, standing in full armour with a sword held point-down before him, his head covered by a crowned helmet. Behind him rises a detailed rendering of a medieval fortified castle with cylindrical towers, surrounded by trees, beneath a dramatically textured sky of roiling clouds. The arc legend SIXTH CRUSADE 1225 is inscribed along the upper rim. In the lower field, the Jerusalem Cross emblem is flanked by the inscription FREDERICK II / HOLY ROMAN / EMPEROR, and the split date 20 14 appears below, straddling the cross device. |
