Beschrijving voorzijde Third portrait effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara and a pearl necklace, as modelled by Raphael Maklouf. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left periphery and NEW ZEALAND along the right periphery. The date 1998 appears in the lower field beneath the portrait. The finely detailed proof surface contrasts the high-relief bust against a deeply mirrored field.

Aanvullende informatie

New Zealand's royal albatross colony at Taiaroa Head on the Otago Peninsula is the only mainland albatross breeding site in the Southern Hemisphere — a geographical anomaly that made the bird a natural subject for commemorative issues by the late 1990s. The colony itself was established from a single egg found in 1919 and has been closely managed ever since, with individual birds tracked over lifespans exceeding 60 years.
