New Zealand's royal albatross colony at Taiaroa Head on the Otago Peninsula is the only mainland albatross breeding site in the Southern Hemisphere — a geographical anomaly that made the bird a natural subject for commemorative issues by the late 1990s. The colony itself was established from a single egg found in 1919 and has been closely managed ever since, with individual birds tracked over lifespans exceeding 60 years.
