The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the upper left rim and NEW ZEALAND along the upper right rim, with the date 1996 inscribed at the bottom of the field. The designer's initials RDM appear incuse on the truncation. |

Within the centre of the garter the inscription 70th Birthday Greetings is rendered in elegant script lettering. The legend H.M. Queen Elizabeth II is distributed in cursive script around the outer field, flanked at lower left and lower right by finely detailed rose sprays in relief. The denomination Five Dollars appears in matching cursive script along the lower outer border. |

New Zealand's commemorative coinage of the 1990s was produced largely through the Royal Mint on contract, a common arrangement for smaller Commonwealth nations lacking high-volume precious metal striking capacity. This piece marks Elizabeth II's 70th birthday in 1996, the same year the Queen made her fifteenth visit to New Zealand — a country whose constitutional ties to the Crown had survived a close republican debate in the preceding decade.
The third portrait, by Raphael Maklouf, was already being phased out across Commonwealth issues by this date, replaced by the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy from 1998 onward in New Zealand's circulation coinage.
