Niue has operated as a prolific licensing issuer for decades, contracting its sovereign minting rights to produce commemorative coinage with no domestic circulation function. This piece folds together two distinct subjects: a reigning British monarch whose portrait carries legal-tender status across several Pacific territories including Niue, and the Latvian dainas — the short, unrhymed folk songs collected and systematized in the 19th century largely through the monumental work of Krišjānis Barons, who catalogued over 200,000 variants between 1894 and 1915.

The dainas were inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2001.
