The Isetta was a product of financial desperation, not automotive ambition. BMW acquired the license from Italian firm Iso in 1954 specifically because the company was hemorrhaging money and needed a cheap vehicle Germans could actually afford in the post-war recovery economy. It worked — the microcar saved BMW from almost certain bankruptcy or absorption by a larger manufacturer.
Palau's silver commemorative series has long targeted niche automotive nostalgia, and the Isetta fits that pattern precisely. KM#588 is one of several transport-themed issues from this run.
