The Bank of Weston was chartered in Lewis County, Virginia — territory that would be carved out of the state during the Civil War to form West Virginia in 1863. Notes issued in 1859 like this one were circulating in the months before secession debates made the political future of western Virginia genuinely uncertain, and many antebellum Virginia state bank issues were repudiated or rendered worthless by the war's disruption of the banking system.
The American Bank Note Company imprint dates this to after the 1858 merger that consolidated several competing security printers into ABNC, placing it precisely in that company's earliest production period.
