The Bank of St. Thomas operated in St. Thomas, Ontario — not the Caribbean island that trips up nearly every first-time researcher. The town was a significant railway junction in southwestern Ontario during the 1870s, and local chartered banks of the period routinely commissioned American Bank Note Company in New York for their engraved currency, as Canadian printing infrastructure at the time couldn't match ABNCo's intaglio quality or anti-counterfeiting capabilities.
The Bank of St. Thomas had a short and troubled history, failing in 1879 — just a year after this note was issued.
