Obverse description At left, a frosted maple leaf-shaped transparent window is set into the polymer substrate, with the denomination printed below. The central vignette presents an intaglio portrait of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Prime Minister of Canada 1896–1911, rendered in fine line engraving against a coloured guilloche underprint. To the right, a vertical see-through holographic strip incorporates a secondary portrait of Laurier at its upper portion, a vignette of the Mackenzie Tower atop the West Block of Parliament in Ottawa at its lower portion, and repeating numeral and text elements throughout, bordered by a translucent maple leaf motif; the denomination and issue year appear at the extreme right edge.
