Obverse description The obverse is dominated by blue and yellow tones, with a intaglio portrait of Sir Wilfrid Laurier — Canada's seventh Prime Minister (1896–1911) and the first Francophone to hold that office — positioned to the right, accompanied by his name and tenure dates. To the left appear the Bank of Canada bilingual title and the Canadian coat of arms, while a vignette of the West Block of the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa occupies the centre, with a Canadian flag and the numeral "5" printed above and below the accompanying legend.
