| Obverse description | The obverse is dominated by an elaborate multicolor ornamental design in the traditional Mongolian decorative style, with a central circular vignette containing a four-pointed white lozenge motif surrounded by concentric guilloche rings in pink and green. Swirling cloud-scroll arabesques in red, green, and gold radiate outward to four corner roundels and two side roundels, each bearing the numeral '5' or the denomination 'DOLLARS'. Mongolia's 1924 currency series was issued in the immediate aftermath of the Mongolian People's Republic's establishment, when the new government had no domestic printing infrastructure whatsoever. Contracting the American Bank Note Company was a pragmatic necessity — and an ideologically awkward one for a Soviet-aligned state, given that ABNCo was a thoroughly capitalist American firm printing revolutionary currency.
The "R" suffix in Pick's catalog designation indicates a remainder — unissued stock, never formally released into circulation. This series is primarily known through remainders, which is why signed and dated issued examples command a significant premium over these unsigned counterparts.
