Bonaire formally adopted the US dollar as its official currency on January 1, 2011, following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles on October 10, 2010 — a political restructuring that made Bonaire a special municipality of the Netherlands rather than part of an autonomous country. This coin was issued in that inaugural year of dollarization, yet denominated in a currency unit the island does not otherwise use in paper form.
