This coin was struck the same year Iraq invaded Kuwait — August 1990 — triggering the Gulf War and the UN sanctions regime that followed. The sanctions devastated Iraq's import capacity and eventually forced the central bank toward cheaper aluminum coinage in subsequent years, making this bronze issue one of the last of its weight and composition class before the currency infrastructure began to deteriorate.
