Issued to mark the beginning of the 15th Hijri century — corresponding to the Muslim year 1401, which opened in November 1980 — this piece was struck less than six months after Iraq invaded Kuwait's northern neighbor Iran, a conflict that would reshape Gulf politics for a decade. Kuwait walked a difficult diplomatic line throughout the Iran-Iraq War, ultimately tilting financial support toward Baghdad while hosting significant Palestinian and Egyptian labor populations whose remittances sustained regional economies.
