Obverse description The German Federal Eagle displayed prominently in the upper field, wings spread and head turned to the right in the heraldic tradition of the Bundesadler. Below the eagle, the legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND arcs across the field, followed by DEUTSCHE MARK on the next line. The denomination numeral 5 is boldly rendered at center-bottom, flanked by the split date 19 and 79, with the Hamburg mint mark J positioned beneath the numeral. The design follows the standard obverse type used for West German commemorative 5 Mark pieces of this period.
