The island sits geographically between Britain and Ireland, and medieval Manx culture absorbed strands of both Celtic and Anglophone legend. Merlin as a figure derives largely from Geoffrey of Monmouth's 12th-century Historia Regum Britanniae, which itself drew on earlier Welsh sources, making him one of the few Arthurian characters with a traceable literary genealogy predating the French romances.
