Nicaragua's 1987 coinage was issued during the Sandinista government's losing battle against hyperinflation, which would eventually render the entire córdoba series worthless within years. By 1988, the government introduced the "new córdoba" at a rate of 1,000 to one, effectively wiping out the face value of this coin before most examples had seen meaningful circulation — which is why survivors in better condition are not unusual.
