The Bank of Eastern Chekiang was a short-lived regional institution operating in what is now Zhejiang Province during the final years of the Second Sino-Japanese War. This 1945 issue came at an extraordinarily turbulent moment — Japanese forces had occupied much of the region, and local banking infrastructure was fragmented between collaborationist, Nationalist, and Communist-aligned institutions competing to maintain monetary authority over the same territory.
The S-prefix Pick number places this firmly in the specialized Chinese provincial and local issues category, a classification that reflects how genuinely decentralized Chinese currency became during the 1937–1945 period. Regional notes like this one often circulated only within a few counties.
