The short-toed snake eagle (*Circaetus gallicus*) appeared on Russian bimetallic circulation coins as part of the Bank of Russia's long-running "Red Book" series, which began in 1994 to highlight species listed in Russia's national register of endangered fauna. The Moscow Mint has produced dozens of denominations in this format over the decades, making the series one of the more sustained wildlife conservation coinage programs globally.
