Jamaica's decimal coinage was introduced in 1969 when the island abandoned the British colonial pound system, two years after independence had already been secured. The "narrow legend" designation distinguishes this type from a later modified obverse, a subtle spacing change that collectors use to separate die generations within the same KM number.
