Two Taino figures serve as supporters — a female figure to the left bearing a basket of tropical fruit, and a male warrior to the right holding a spear — both rendered in fine relief. A scroll beneath the shield bears the national motto in the legend. The country name JAMAICA arcs across the upper field in bold Latin lettering, with the date 1977 positioned at the base. Jamaica's decimal coinage was introduced in 1969 when the island abandoned the British colonial pound system, two years after independence had already been secured. The "narrow legend" designation distinguishes this type from a later modified obverse, a subtle spacing change that collectors use to separate die generations within the same KM number.
