Above the shield rises a helmet and crest with two crossed pieces of sugar cane. A scroll beneath bears the national motto in two sections: 'PRIDE AND INDUSTRY' flanking 'AND'. The date is divided to either side of the arms, with '20' at the left and the final two digits at the right. The shift to brass-plated steel was a cost-cutting measure driven by rising nickel prices in the mid-2000s, a pressure felt by small-island economies with limited minting budgets and no domestic coin production — Barbados has always contracted its coinage abroad, primarily through the Royal Canadian Mint and the Franklin Mint over the decades. The steel core makes these pieces noticeably responsive to a magnet, a quick authentication check that separates them cleanly from the earlier brass KM#11 pieces.
