The shift to brass-plated steel was a cost-cutting measure driven by rising nickel prices in the mid-2000s, a pressure felt by small-island economies with limited minting budgets and no domestic coin production — Barbados has always contracted its coinage abroad, primarily through the Royal Canadian Mint and the Franklin Mint over the decades.
