The national legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper periphery, while the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed in the lower field within the wreath. Notably, this first-year type lacks the word CENTS beneath the V, an omission that led unscrupulous individuals to gold-plate the coins and pass them as five-dollar gold pieces. Fine denticles ring the outer rim. |
