The Ethiopia-United States Mapping Mission was a joint geodetic and cartographic survey operation run under a bilateral agreement, tasked with producing accurate topographic maps of Ethiopia — work that had real Cold War utility. L'American Club was almost certainly the recreational facility attached to the mission compound, a common feature of American overseas postings in the period.
