| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of President Thomas Jefferson occupies the central field, rendered in high relief in the classic portrait style originally designed by Felix Schlag. The legend IN GOD WE TRUST arcs along the left rim, while LIBERTY and the date 2004 appear along the right rim, separated by a five-pointed star. The mint mark (S, D, or P) is positioned below the date near the rim, and the engraver's initials FS appear in small characters at the lower right of the bust truncation. |
