Sarawak's coinage under the White Rajahs occupies a peculiar corner of numismatic history — a private dynasty ruling a sovereign state, issuing currency in a family name rather than a crown or republic. Charles Vyner Brooke succeeded his father Charles Anthoni in 1917, and this series was struck across the London and Heaton mints during a period when Sarawak's rubber and petroleum revenues were beginning to dwarf the pepper trade that had originally financed Rajah James Brooke's original concession from the Sultan of Brunei in 1841.
The shift to copper-nickel from earlier silver-washed issues reflects post-WWI metal economics, not local preference.
