Sri Lanka's transition from Ceylon was formalized in May 1972, and the coinage series followed — though not immediately. This 1975 issue belongs to the first decimal series struck under the Sri Lanka name, replacing the Ceylon rupee coinage that had circulated largely unchanged since the early independence period. The nickel brass composition was a practical choice given copper-nickel shortages affecting several Commonwealth mints at the time.
