Sabadell issued cardboard emergency currency during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone faced chronic shortages of small-denomination coinage after silver and copper stocks were hoarded, melted, or simply ceased circulating. Municipalities across Catalonia produced their own suplements — locally sanctioned scrip meant to fill the gap left by the collapsing national coinage supply. Sabadell, as one of the major industrial centers of the Vallès Occidental, issued several denominations in this format.
Cardboard pieces were inherently fragile, and attrition rates were high even in short circulation. Turró 2239 reflects the cataloguing work of Andreu Turró, whose reference remains the standard for Spanish Civil War local issues.
