During the Spanish Civil War, the hoarding of metal coinage created acute small-change shortages across Republican-held territory. Local businesses, cooperatives, and municipal bodies across Catalonia responded by issuing their own emergency fractional currency — these are known collectively as moneda local or paper moneda. This particular piece comes from a dairy shop, a lleteria, operated by one Maurici Casasayes in Manresa, a textile and industrial town in the Bages comarca of Catalonia.
The Albertí catalog reference AL#3184 places it within the exhaustive Catalan Civil War emergency issues documentation. Thousands of distinct local issuers exist across that catalog — a dairy among them is entirely unremarkable for the period.
