Fornells de la Selva is a small Catalan municipality near Girona that, like hundreds of other Republican-held towns during the Spanish Civil War, faced an acute shortage of metallic currency after 1936. The central government's inability to supply sufficient coinage forced local councils — consells municipals — to issue their own emergency paper and cardboard fractional currency, known as moneda local or guerra civil local issues.
