Issued as part of the FAO's global coin program, which throughout the late 1960s and 1970s persuaded central banks worldwide to dedicate circulating issues to agricultural development themes. Algeria's participation came just eight years after independence, during a period when the government was aggressively restructuring land ownership through socialist agrarian reform — the same political program that would culminate in the 1971 Agricultural Revolution decree nationalizing all privately held farmland above set acreage limits.
