| Beschrijving voorzijde | Left-facing draped bust of Marianne, the allegorical figure of the French Republic, engraved in the style of Daniel Dupuis. The effigy features a Phrygian cap and fine drapery rendered with great sculptural depth, characteristic of the Third Republic coinage aesthetic. The legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE curves along the upper periphery in raised Latin letters. The field is matte-finished, consistent with the piéfort flan specification. The Daniel-Dupuis 5 centimes design entered production in 1897, the result of an open competition that Dupuis won with a naturalistic treatment markedly different from the neoclassical idiom that had dominated French minor coinage for decades. Piéforts — struck at double or greater thickness on prepared matte flans — were produced by the Monnaie de Paris primarily for archival and presentation purposes, not circulation, and the 1898 bronze example in this format survives in very small numbers.
GEM 14.P1 designates the first piéfort listing for this type, confirming its place as the earliest documented striking in this format for the series.
