The Daniel-Dupuis 5 centimes design entered production in 1897, the result of an open competition that Dupuis won with a naturalistic treatment markedly different from the neoclassical idiom that had dominated French minor coinage for decades. Piéforts — struck at double or greater thickness on prepared matte flans — were produced by the Monnaie de Paris primarily for archival and presentation purposes, not circulation, and the 1898 bronze example in this format survives in very small numbers.
