To the left of the hole, the large numeral '5' denotes the denomination, while to the right the abbreviation 'CMES' (for Centimes) appears within a decorative cartouche. The Republican motto 'LIBERTÉ·ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ' is inscribed in two arcing lines along the upper periphery. The date appears in the lower field, divided on either side of the central olive spray.
