This denomination was part of the monetary system Cuba retained after the Revolution specifically to manage low-value domestic transactions, keeping prices politically stable during the early rationing period under the libreta system. The long production run — over five decades without a fundamental redesign — reflects how little the Cuban government wanted to signal monetary instability through coinage changes. The alloy choice was economical and deliberate; aluminium coinage required no hard currency to source domestically, unlike the copper and nickel issues it effectively replaced.
