The shield is surmounted by the Phrygian cap atop a pike, symbolising liberty, and flanked on either side by olive and oak branches tied at the base. Cuba maintained a dual-currency system from 1994 until 2021, running the peso cubano (CUP) alongside the convertible peso (CUC) — a monetary arrangement introduced after the collapse of Soviet subsidies devastated the island's economy. The 5 centavos circulated in the CUP tier, used almost exclusively by Cuban nationals rather than tourists. When the government finally unified the two currencies in January 2021, the CUC was abolished entirely, ending nearly three decades of a two-track system that had effectively created separate economic realities for citizens and foreigners.
