Peru issued this piece in 1954 to mark the centennial of the abolition of slavery under President Ramón Castilla, who freed an estimated 25,000 enslaved people by decree on December 3, 1854 — a move financed in part by revenues from the guano trade boom that was then underwriting much of the Peruvian state.
