Obverse description Right-facing bust of Ramón Castilla, Liberator and Marshal of Peru, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail showing his coat collar. The legend REPUBLICA PERUANA arcs along the upper periphery, while the commemorative inscription LIBERTADOR MARISCAL CASTILLA curves along the lower rim. The date 1954 appears in the lower field at the collar's base, and the engraver's signature R PELLETIER is present near the truncation.

Peru issued this piece in 1954 to mark the centennial of the abolition of slavery under President Ramón Castilla, who freed an estimated 25,000 enslaved people by decree on December 3, 1854 — a move financed in part by revenues from the guano trade boom that was then underwriting much of the Peruvian state.
